Overview North Harmony is a town in central Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Chautauqua, to the east by Chautauqua Lake (and beyond that, Ellery) and part of Busti, to the south by Harmony and to the west by Sherman. North Harmony contains no village, but several hamlets, including Ashville, the largest. Chautauqua Lake straddles most of the town’s eastern border, and many of the hamlets are lakeside communities.
North Harmony is a mainly rural town with plenty of wide-open space – but you’re also just minutes away from places like the Chautauqua Institution, the fun village of Bemus Point, the Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood, and, of course, all of the lake’s attractions.
Local Museums & Landmarks
Harmony Historical Society Museum, which includes a rural home, barn and school house, is in Ashville. The hamlet also is home to the Smith Bly House, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The neighboring town of Sherman has the Yorker Museum, called a “village within a village” and containing six restored buildings. Just east in Bemus Point, you’ll find a variety of historic sites, including the Bemus Point Historical Museum, which documents Chautauqua Lake memorabilia and local genealogy. The Lawson Center at Bemus Point showcases the region’s boating history. Midway State Park Museum includes one of the oldest amusement parks in the country. Chautauqua, just 8 miles north, has plenty of historic sites and entire districts listed as national landmarks including the Chautauqua Institution. |
