Overview

North Harmony is a town in central Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Chautauqua, to the east by Chautauqua Lake (and beyond that, Ellery) and part of Busti, to the south by Harmony and to the west by Sherman. North Harmony contains no village, but several hamlets, including Ashville, the largest. Chautauqua Lake straddles most of the town’s eastern border, and many of the hamlets are lakeside communities.



Essentials

The Ashville General Store is your best bet for grocery shopping in town. Bemus Point also has small grocers; for a wider variety of grocery shopping, Tops Friendly Markets stores are in nearby Mayville and Jamestown (14 miles east of North Harmony). Wegmans has a supermarket in Jamestown, where you’ll also find an Aldi’s store. For retail shopping, Bemus Point has the century-old Skillman’s Department Store and more. Jamestown and Lakewood both have Walmart Supercenter stores for both retail and grocery shopping, and the widest variety of retail shopping is at Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood (about 10 miles east of North Harmony). 



Recreation & Entertainment

Most of the attractions in North Harmony are of the outdoor variety. There are plenty of other things to do nearby. Bemus Point is home to an old-fashioned Midway State Park amusement park, ferry rides along Chautauqua Lake and the Floating Stage, where outdoor concerts are held. Panama Rocks in Harmony is a great place for hiking and awesome natural sights. Chautauqua Mall has a movie-theater complex and lots more. Chautauqua and Jamestown both have lots of things to see and do. In nearby Sherman (10 miles west), you’ll find Night Lights at the Heron, an eco-tourism attraction where visitors walk a lighted one-mile trail.



Transportation & Traffic

The well-traveled Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and Route 17) passes through North Harmony. Route 474 crosses the southeast part of town, and Route 394 follows the west shore of Chautauqua Lake.



Pros & Cons

North Harmony is a rural, small-town community that is just minutes away from some of the most popular attractions and commercial areas of Chautauqua County. The town’s eastern border straddles Chautauqua Lake.
