Overview

Portland is a town in north-central Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Lake Erie, to the east by the town of Pomfret and the village of Fredonia, to the south by Chautauqua and a bit of Stockton, and to the west by Westfield. Portland includes the village of Brocton and several small hamlets. Lake Erie State Park, with its lovely beaches, is in the northeast part of Portland.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, Brocton has small stores like Country Fair. Just northeast, Dunkirk has stores like Aldi and Save-A-Lot. The closest Tops Friendly Markets store is in neighboring Westfield, just west of Portland. For retail shopping, the nearby village of Fredonia has a Walmart Supercenter and more. Dunkirk has stores like JC Penney and Big Lots in D & F Plaza. Vineyard Plaza, also in Dunkirk, has stores like TJ Maxx and Peebles. Fredonia has a Sears Hometown Store. 



Recreation & Entertainment

With its proximity to Lake Erie, it’s not surprising that the main attractions here are outdoors. Start with Lake Erie State Park, which is known for its big sandy beaches. The park also offers camping, fishing, boating, hiking and cross-country skiing. Nearby attractions include the Fredonia Opera House in Fredonia and the Lucy-Desi Museum in Jamestown (about 27 miles southeast of Brocton). The SUNY Fredonia campus often has activities that are open to the public.



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway (Route 90) and Route 20 cross the northern part of Portland. Route 5 runs parallel to the Lake Erie shoreline, offering scenic views.



Pros & Cons

Portland is small-town living with a lot of wonderful open spaces, including Lake Erie State Park. The village of Brocton has its charm. You’re close to busier municipalities like Dunkirk and Fredonia.
