Welcome to Barrington, NY

Overview

Barrington is a town in southern Yates County, bordered to the north by Milo, to the east by Starkey, to the south by Schuyler County (town of Tyrone) and to the west almost entirely by one of the branches of Keuka Lake. The main attraction here, of course, is lovely Keuka Lake, one of the more picturesque of the Finger Lakes. The town touts its rolling farmland, scenic hardwood forests, bountiful vineyards and miles of Keuka Lake shoreline. There’s not a lot else here – Barrington’s population is less than 1,700. What is here is beautiful.

Essentials

Barrington has little in the way of shopping. The village of Dundee, about 5 miles east in neighboring Starkey, has smaller stores like a Dollar General and a pharmacy. The village of Penn Yan, about 8 miles north, has a Top’s Friendly Markets store for grocery shopping along with Aldi’s and Byrne Dairy, and other stores like Ace Hardware. For a wider variety of places to shop, you’ll have to travel to Geneva in Ontario County, which is about 26 miles north of Barrington. Geneva has a Wegmans supermarket at 300 Hamilton St. and a Tops Friendly Markets store at 381 Hamilton St.; for retail shopping, Geneva has a vibrant downtown area with smaller stores and a few national chains, as well as a Walmart Supercenter on Routes 5 & 20 store and a Peebles at 333 Hamilton St. There’s an antique co-op store on Main Street. Penn Yan has an unusual outdoor market called The Windmill, which is open seasonally.

Recreation & Entertainment

As with most parts of Yates County, the biggest attractions here are the Finger Lakes. Barrington is located along miles of shoreline of Keuka Lake, so people here are fond of boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, picnicking and kayaking. Hunting, snowmobiling and other outdoor activities are the predominant attractions in the cooler-weather months.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 54 runs north-south along the shoreline of Keuka Lake. Route14, which also heads north-south, intersects with Route 230 in the eastern part of town.

Pros & Cons

Keuka Lake shoreline is lovely. This is a sparsely populated, highly rural community, but the villages of Dundee and Penn Yan are nearby.
