Overview Jerusalem is a town in central Yates County, bordered to the north by Potter and Benton, to the east by one branch of Keuka Lake (and beyond that, the town of Milo), to the south by more of the Y-shaped Keuka Lake and by Steuben County, and to the west by the town of Italy. The village of Penn Yan, the county seat, borders the northeast part of town. The hamlet of Branchport (a former village) is at the northwest tip of Keuka Lake. The town has other hamlets like Keuka Park, where you’ll find Keuka College, a four-year higher education university. Keuka Lake State Park, popular with campers, is in the southeast part of Jerusalem. The town contains parts of each branch of Keuka Lake, making access to the water pretty easy here. Local Museums/Landmarks Several sites in Jerusalem are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Peter Bitley House, the Thomas Bitley House, the Samuel Botsford House, Esperanza (a mansion now used as a bed-and–breakfast and as a restaurant), Hampstead, the Uriah Hanford House, the George Hays House, the Ezikial Perry House, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the Sill Tenant House, the Abraham Wagener House, the H. Allen Wagener House, the Jemima Wilkinson House, and the Sherman Williams House and Fruit Barn. Jerusalem has more sites on the register than any other town in Yates County. Branchport also has a few sites on the register, like the Larzelere Tavern.

Essentials The village of Penn Yan has several grocery stores, like a Tops Friendly Markets store, an Aldi’s supermarket and Byrne Dairy, and small retailers like Ace Hardware. The town of Prattsburgh, about 14 miles southwest in Steuben County, has small stores like the Prattsburgh Market Place and an Arrow Mart. For more shopping choices, the closest place is the city of Geneva in nearby Ontario County (about 24 miles northeast of Jerusalem), which has a Wal-Mart Super Center, a Peebles department store, pharmacies, and an assortment of smaller stores like Dollar General. Penn Yan also has the popular outdoor market known as The Windmill, which is open seasonally. Students who live in Jerusalem attend the Penn Yan Central School District, which has one elementary school, one middle school and the Penn Yan Academy High School. The closest hospital is Soldiers & Sailors in Penn Yan; the next closest is Geneva General in Ontario County. The Penn Yan Public Library serves residents here.

Keuka Lake State Park is popular with campers. Jerusalem is highly rural and in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region, and two branches of Keuka Lake are within the town’s borders. That means lots of boat launches and easy access to the lake. Wine is huge in this area, with lots of nearby wineries making up the Finger Lakes Wine Trail. Penn Yan has a movie-theater multiplex. Keuka College offers occasional entertainment choices, like concerts, lectures and sports teams. Geneva has more things to do, including a vibrant downtown district with restaurants and bars, the Smith Opera House and a collegiate-league baseball team. Hammondsport in Steuben County, about 17 miles south, has the Glenn H. Curtis Museum which is dedicated to the aviation pioneer.
