Overview

orrey is a town on the eastern edge of Yates County, bordered to the north by Benton, to the east by Seneca Lake, to the south by Milo and to the west by Milo and Benton. Seneca Lake, one of the largest of the Finger Lakes, delineates Torrey’s east town line and as such, the lake is the biggest attraction here. Boating, fishing, and camping are big here, and lakeside cottages are abundant. Agriculture is the main business here, with several smaller farms.


Essentials

Torrey doesn’t have much in the way of business besides a couple of garages, a woodworking shop and a garden shop. Shopping needs can be met with quick drives to nearby communities. Penn Yan, only 7 miles west of Torrey, has a Top’s Friendly Markets store for grocery shopping along with Aldi’s and Byrne Dairy, and other stores like Ace Hardware. The city of Geneva (in Ontario County) is only 15 miles north of Torrey. Geneva has a Wegmans supermarket at 300 Hamilton St. and a Tops Friendly Markets store at 381 Hamilton St. and for retail shopping, Geneva has a vibrant downtown area with smaller stores and a few national chains, as well as a Walmart Supercenter on Routes 5 & 20 store and a Peebles at 333 Hamilton St. There’s an antique co-op store on Main Street.



Recreation & Entertainment

This is the heart of the Finger Lakes, with Seneca Lake along the eastern edge of Torrey and Keuka Lake less than 10 miles west. As such, you’ll want to take in boating, fishing, camping and other outdoor activities here. You’re also in the heart of Finger Lakes Wine Country: Route 14 runs along the eastern edge of town, overlooking Seneca Lake (with breathtaking views) and chock-full of wineries that attract lots of visitors. At the southern end of Seneca Lake, about 24 miles south of Torrey, is Watkins Glen, which has a world-famous racetrack and a spectacular gorge trail accessible via Watkins Glen State Park.



Transportation & Traffic

The main road here is Route 14, which runs north-south along the shoreline of Seneca Lake. Route 54 runs east-west and intersects Route 14 in Dresden.



Pros & Cons

Torrey is a small, quiet town whose top attraction is Seneca Lake. It’s also just a short drive to Penn Yan and Keuka Lake. The farms are small and increasingly more organic in nature. There are plenty of wineries to visit along Route 14.
