Overview

Pomfret is a town in north-central Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Dunkirk, to the east by Sheridan and Arkwright, to the south by Stockton (and the village of Cassadaga) and to the west by Portland (and the village of Brocton). Pomfret includes the village of Fredonia, which is home to the State University of New York at Fredonia. Pomfet has several hamlets and bodies of water (like Bear Lake, Canadaway Creek, and Cassadaga Lake) that are hot spots for fishing and boating. Hunting is also popular in the town’s wide-open spaces. The Lily Dale Spiritualist community is within Pomfret.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, Pomfret and Fredonia have Country Fair and the Fredonia Deli and Food Mart and the Walmart Supercenter. Dunkirk has a Tops Friendly Markets store, an Aldi’s store, P & G Foods and more. For retail shopping, Fredonia has a Walmart Supercenter on Bennett Road and a Sears Hometown Store on Main Street. Dunkirk has a wide variety of stores, including JC Penney, Big Lots, Peebles, Home Depot and more. 



Recreation & Entertainment

The Rockefeller Arts Center, on the SUNY Fredonia campus, has a 1,200-seat concert hall, two galleries and classrooms and hosts musical and theatrical performances and more. Fredonia Opera House has concerts, films and other events in a restored Victorian-era opera house. Wine connoisseurs will enjoy Woodbury Vineyards in Fredonia, one of the area’s several wineries (the area is nestled in the county’s “grape country”).



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway (Route 90) and Route 20 both pass through Pomfret. Route 60 is a major north-south highway. Route 5 runs along the shore of Lake Erie.



Pros & Cons

With about 15,000 residents, Pomfret is one of the more populated towns in Chautauqua County, and most of the residents here live in the village of Fredonia. The State University of New York at Fredonia, also known as SUNY Fredonia, keeps this area hopping. Pomfret and surrounding towns offer plenty of entertainment, shopping and dining options, and it’s a quick drive to Lake Erie and its attractions.
